How to Fight the Groundskeeper

Use a cautious Well Dweller Groundskeeper plan: prepare at the nearby tent, watch each telegraph, slide through a safe opening, and limit counterattacks.

For the Groundskeeper in Well Dweller, save at the nearby tent if it is present in your build, watch one complete attack cycle, and use a brief opening for one or two matchstick hits before moving away. Public demo reports describe an overhead attack that can be avoided by sliding through the boss; confirm its cue and direction in your own version before relying on it.

The Groundskeeper is a named fight from Well Dweller's public demo. A Giant Bomb demo review describes a tent next to the boss and a fight with several recognizable patterns. A The Indie Informer preview also identifies the demo boss as the Groundskeeper. Those are observations of the demo, not an independent verification of every move in the September 22 release build.

Before entering the garden fight

Find the nearby return point shown in your version. If the tent described by public demo coverage is still there, use it before entering so a failed attempt does not require unnecessary travel. Read your current trinket descriptions and decide whether you need a safer survival setup or a shorter fight. The official Steam description confirms that trinkets can modify abilities, but no official source identifies a single required item for this encounter.

Make sure you know the movement action that lets you avoid an attack on your platform. Do not follow a fixed “press X” instruction from a different controller layout. Test the action before the fight if the arena approach gives you room. Check your available healing resource as well. A recovery item is most useful when you already know which boss move leaves enough time to use it safely.

If you are returning after several failures, change only one part of your preparation. You can test a different trinket, a more cautious attack rhythm or a new response to one move. Changing equipment, timing and position at once makes it difficult to understand why the next attempt succeeds or fails.

Read one move before attacking

On the first attempt, stand at a distance from which you can see the boss clearly and observe the start of its attack. Note whether the cue comes from the body, a weapon windup or an effect on the arena. Then move to safety before thinking about damage. This is slower than rushing in, but it gives you a repeatable answer to that move on the next attempt.

A public beginner report describes a large overhead swing and recommends sliding through the Groundskeeper's legs before a short counterattack. Treat that as a demo-era tactic to test, not as proof that every current difficulty setting or later phase has exactly the same timing. If the slide is unsafe in your build, prioritize evasion and wait for a clearer recovery window.

Keep the counterattack short. One or two hits provide information about the length of the opening without committing Glimmer to a long animation. If the boss starts a new cue, stop attacking and respond to it. A second successful avoidance is more valuable than one extra hit followed by a reset. The same rhythm helps you learn whether the boss's position changes after each attack.

Handle retries and healing deliberately

If you are repeatedly hit by the same move, spend an attempt watching only that cue. Move early enough to leave its path, then check whether you had room to attack afterward. If the timing feels close, shorten the counterattack or wait out an additional cycle. A failed attempt can still be productive if it removes one uncertain part of the pattern.

Use healing only after a move whose recovery you have seen. Public reviews discuss oil vials as the game's healing resource, but neither their exact stock nor the safest timing should be guessed from an older demo. The in-game interface and current tutorial take priority. If healing repeatedly gets interrupted, stop trying it at that point in the cycle and seek another opening.

If a particular trinket seems promising, test it in two comparable attempts. A stronger feeling after one lucky dodge is not enough to call a trinket objectively best. The trinket overview offers a simple way to compare options without fabricating effect values or upgrade costs.

When you retry, notice where Glimmer stands as the boss begins the move that defeats you. A different starting position can make the same response easier to time. Repeat that position once before changing both the movement and the trinket setup; otherwise you will not know which adjustment helped.

When the fight changes

Do not assume the attack rhythm stays identical from first hit to last. If the boss pauses, repositions, introduces another cue or changes the arena, return to observation for one cycle. Identify what changed before resuming the same counterattack. A guide for a single demo recording can miss a later phase, a difficulty variation or a launch update.

After the encounter, use your own map and objective information to decide where to go next. We are not asserting a specific reward, ability unlock or route in this guide because those details have not been independently reproduced on the released build. The map guide can help with the next location without exposing the whole game's sequence.

Reviewed September 23, 2026. The encounter name and nearby tent come from the Giant Bomb demo review and The Indie Informer preview. The overhead-slide tactic is an independently published player report, linked above. These sources document the public demo; this page does not claim that we personally verified the full-release arena, reward or every attack. For other encounters, return to the Bosses hub.
